Recent research has shown that engagement in arts and crafts (including coloring, drawing, sewing, and many more activities) may delay the onset of memory problems in old age. In one particular study conducted by the American Academy of Neurology, researchers followed participants between ages 85 to 89 years old over a period of four years. At the start of the study, these individuals did not have any memory-related disorders. Participants were evaluated on their engagement in both artistic and crafting activities.
Results from this study found that of the individuals who engaged in frequent artistic activities (like painting and drawing) were 73% less likely to suffer from memory related issues. The study also found that individuals who engaged in frequent crafting activities (like sewing and quilting) were 45% less likely to develop memory related issues over time. However, researchers caution that simply engaging in these types of artistic behaviors does not guarantee that an individual will not suffer from memory problems. This is largely due to the fact that memory-related disorders and cognitive decline are also associated with other risk factors including overall health and genetic predisposition.
That being said, this is not the first study to link creativity to mental function. In March, The New York Times published a story describing how many older adults have found coloring in coloring books to be a relaxing escape during times of stress. Thus, although activities like coloring and finger painting have previously been targeted towards children, current research is suggesting that what was once considered child’s play is now beneficial at all ages. What this means for you and your loved ones is that there is no shame in breaking out the arts and crafts that your children and grandchildren use. In fact, we encourage it! So get out those crayons and knitting needles and create something today!
